Blue sky. Deep blue sea. The radiance of the South—captured in porcelain. Journey south in our exhibition.
The special exhibition CAPRI at the Porcelain Museum in Augarten transports visitors to a world full of light, longing, and Mediterranean joie de vivre. It tells of the centuries-old fascination that Italy has held for those north of the Alps – of grand tours and lemon groves, of ancient ruins, Venetian gondolas, and the smoking Vesuvius.
As early as 1790, Viennese landscape painters immortalized Italian motifs on the finest porcelain: romantic coasts, famous sights, and the dramatic natural spectacle of the volcano. Later, Josef Hoffmann raved about the unique light of Capri – impressions that possibly influenced his designs for the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory. The exhibition shows how closely Vienna and Italy are culturally connected – in art, design, and way of life. And how porcelain became a mirror of this relationship: as a canvas for wanderlust, as an expression of elegance, and as a testament to European cultural history. A visit is like a small journey to the South – just a stroll away from the center of Vienna.
